Journal of Experimental and Clinical Toxicology

The Journal of Experimental and Clinical Toxicology publishes peer-reviewed research on how toxic substances act on biological systems, and on how poisoning is recognized, assessed, treated and prevented.

Open access · Peer reviewed · ISSN 2641-7669

The discipline

Mechanism and patient, in one record

Experimental toxicology

Mechanisms of molecular and cellular injury, dose–response characterization, toxicokinetics and metabolism, target-organ effects, environmental contaminants and natural toxins, and the analytical, in vitro and computational methods that measure them.

Clinical toxicology

Recognition and assessment of poisoning and envenomation, adverse drug effects, antidotal and supportive management, occupational and environmental exposure in patients, prevention, and case-based reports of presentation and course.

A study contained entirely within experimental toxicology and a study contained entirely within clinical practice each belong here on their own terms, and neither is asked to carry the other.

Attenuation of Microcystins Using Electron Beams and Gamma Radiation: A Study with Environment-Bound Conditions

Joao Dias Toledo Arruda-Neto, Erika Cavalcante-Silva, Henriette Righi, Odete Rocha, Maria do Carmo Bittencourt-Oliveira, Micheline K. Cordeiro-Araújo

Arruda-Neto and colleagues irradiated microcystins under conditions that reproduce contamination of surface water, with the toxin held inside intact cyanobacterial cells and dissolved in the surrounding water, at doses of 3, 5, 10 and 15 kGy. Toxicity was read from immobilization of Ceriodaphnia silvestrii, and electron beams attenuated the toxin completely at 5 kGy and above.

NNC55-0396 Reduces SH-SY5Y Cell Damage Induced by Bupivacaine Hydrochloride

Xianjie Wen, Zhaoxia Wu, Shiyuan Xu

Wen, Wu and Xu examine bupivacaine-associated neurotoxicity in cultured SH-SY5Y cells and the part played by the T-type calcium channel in that injury. With the channel blocker NNC55-0396 they report higher cell viability, lower intracellular calcium and less apoptosis — a mechanism characterized in an experimental model, not a treatment demonstrated in patients.

Minimal Risk Level Derivation for Cadmium: Acute and Intermediate Duration Exposures

Obaid Faroon, Sam Keith, Moiz Mumtaz, Patricia Ruiz

Faroon, Keith, Mumtaz and Ruiz set out how the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry derives minimal risk levels for cadmium, using the NOAEL/LOAEL approach for acute inhalation and the benchmark-dose approach for intermediate-duration oral exposure. They report an acute inhalation value of 0.03 µg Cd/m3 and an intermediate oral value of 0.5 µg Cd/kg/day for decreased bone mineral density.

Experimental models establish mechanism and plausibility. Demonstrated clinical benefit is established separately, in studies conducted in patients, and the journal keeps that distinction visible in how findings are reported.

Submitting

How a manuscript is handled

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

Decisions remain independent of fees, membership, editorial roles and paid services.
