Fit

What makes a manuscript right for this journal

A manuscript is in scope when its research question, analytical focus, interpretation or principal contribution materially advances understanding of respiratory disease or health, including the physiology of breathing where it informs that subject.

  • Any study designExperimental, observational, descriptive, qualitative, health-services and methodological work are considered on the same footing.
  • Any stage of evidenceMechanistic, translational, clinical, epidemiological and implementation research are each in scope in their own right.
  • Confirmatory and negative findingsWell-conducted studies are assessed on their conduct and reporting, whatever direction the result takes.
  • Interdisciplinary contributionsPhysiology, imaging, data science, occupational health and public health are welcome wherever the respiratory contribution is substantive.

The aims and scope sets out the five territories the journal covers and where the boundary falls.

What to expect

How your manuscript will be handled

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. They are independent of fees, services, membership, and editorial or reviewer roles.

An article processing charge is payable after acceptance, never before, and accepted articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license.
