The charge
One charge, after acceptance
There is no submission fee and no charge for peer review. A single article processing charge is invoiced after a manuscript has been accepted for publication, and it covers everything that follows acceptance.
Decisions remain independent of fees, membership, editorial roles and paid services. The editors who assess a manuscript do not see its payment status, and acceptance is never conditional on payment having been made.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

- Screening, the coordination of independent peer review, and the editorial work that produces a decision.
- Production
- Copyediting, typesetting, proofing and the preparation of the published article.
- Registration and metadata
- DOI registration with Crossref and the deposit of article metadata for discovery services.
- Open access hosting
- Permanent hosting of the full text and PDF under a Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY 4.0), free to read, with no subscription or reader charge.
- Preservation
- Commitment of the article to the Portico preservation archive.
Billing
How invoicing works

The manuscript is accepted on editorial grounds. Only then is the charge raised.

An invoice is issued to the corresponding author or to the institution or funder named for billing.

Production and proofing proceed once payment is confirmed.

The article publishes after the authors approve the proofs.
Institutions and funders can be invoiced directly. Name the billing contact during submission so the invoice reaches the right office first time.
Billing and fee-relief inquiries
Authors who need to discuss the charge should contact the editorial office at [email protected] before submitting, and include the funding position for the work. Members of the journal pay a reduced charge; the terms are set out on the Membership page.
Withdrawal
Withdrawing a manuscript
Authors should contact the editorial office promptly and wait for written confirmation before submitting the work elsewhere.
Manuscripts withdrawn within 3 days of submission are not subject to a withdrawal charge.
Manuscripts withdrawn more than 3 days after submission incur a withdrawal charge equal to 30% of the journal's APC.
Authors must receive official withdrawal confirmation before submitting the manuscript to another journal.
