Membership
Membership supports the journal's open access publishing and gives members a reduced article processing charge and access to the journal's member programs. It is optional, and it is kept entirely separate from editorial judgment.

Membership and peer review are separate
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Those decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships and roles.
What membership changes is the invoice and the member programs described below. A member's manuscript is judged on the same evidence, by the same editors, in the order it reaches them.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Early career
Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers
Doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers qualify for a 50% reduction on the membership fee. Verification of current training status is required at application.
The reduction applies to membership only. It does not change how a trainee's manuscript is assessed, and trainee authors are held to exactly the same evidential standard as any other author.

How to join
Applying for membership
Write to the editorial office stating the level you want and, for the trainee rate, your current training status. Membership is not required in order to submit a manuscript, and a manuscript from a non-member is assessed identically to a manuscript from a member.
