How the journal is identified
An identifier is what lets a library catalog, a reference list or a funder report point unambiguously at this journal rather than another with a similar name.
DOI registration
Articles carry registered Crossref DOIs
Each article is assigned a DOI that is registered with Crossref, so a citation resolves to the article rather than to a URL that may move.
A DOI is a persistent identifier. It gives an article a citable address that resolves to the article record and keeps resolving if the underlying file is ever moved, which is what makes a reference to it durable.
Crossref is the registration agency for these DOIs, and the registered metadata is what reference lists, funder reports and citation services read.
