Special Issues

Propose a Special Issue. The Journal of Immunization welcomes proposals for focused collections that address important questions in immunization. Researchers with relevant expertise are invited to review the proposal requirements below and contact the editorial office.

A special issue in this journal is a scholarly instrument: a set of papers assembled because a question is ready for concentrated attention, assessed by the same standards as everything else the journal publishes.

What a proposal contains

Preparing a proposal

A proposal is assessed on the question it raises and the evidence that the field is ready to answer it.

01

The question

A concise statement of the immunization question the collection would address, and why concentrated treatment would advance it beyond what individual papers already achieve.

02

Scope and fit

How the proposed collection sits within the journal's remit, and which parts of immunization — vaccine science, evaluation and safety, delivery, access, uptake or policy — it would draw on.

03

Guest editors

The proposed guest editors, their relevant published record, current affiliation, and the areas each would be able to assess.

04

Expected contributions

An indication of the work the collection would gather, and whether it would be assembled by open call, by invitation, or by both.

05

Timeline

A realistic period for assembling and reviewing the collection, which the editorial office will discuss before any dates are published.

How a collection is governed

The safeguards that make a special issue trustworthy

A collection assembled around a theme carries a particular risk: that the theme, rather than the evidence, decides what is published. These safeguards exist to prevent that.

The same standard
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. A manuscript in a special issue is assessed exactly as it would be outside one.
Independent review
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Guest-editor recusal
A guest editor recuses themselves from the handling of their own submissions, and of manuscripts from close collaborators or their own institution. Those manuscripts are handled by an editor with no connection to them.
Editorial responsibility
The journal's editors retain final responsibility for every decision in a collection, including the decision to publish the collection at all.
Independence
Decisions remain independent of fees, membership, editorial roles and paid services. A collection is not a route to publication that bypasses assessment.
