Scientific field

What the journal covers

The journal’s subject is neonatology and newborn health, taken broadly: clinical, translational, laboratory, methodological and population research all belong here when a neonatal question is central to the work.

The complete statement of what the journal publishes, including where its boundaries fall and how adjacent work is judged, is on the Aims and Scope page. Authors deciding whether a manuscript fits should read it there rather than here.

Purpose

Why a journal for the newborn

Research on the newborn is produced from several directions at once. It comes from clinicians in intensive care and from the surgical team, from physiologists and developmental biologists, from epidemiologists and health-services researchers, and from the people who design the measurements, devices and training that make newborn care possible.

A specialist journal answers that by doing two things: it gathers the work where the people who need it look for it, and it sends each manuscript to reviewers chosen for their knowledge of the newborn.

That is the role this journal serves. It publishes work in which a neonatal question is the substance of the study rather than its setting, and it assesses that work against the standards of the field it belongs to.

Operation

How the journal works

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Those decisions are independent of fees, services, membership, and editorial or reviewer roles.

Articles are published open access under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license, so readers may share and build on the work provided the authors are credited.

04

Readership

Who the journal is for

The journal is written for the people whose work concerns the newborn: neonatologists and trainees, nurses and allied professionals in newborn care, perinatal and maternal-fetal clinicians whose work meets the neonatal period, and researchers in neonatal physiology, epidemiology, health services and measurement.

Because the journal is open access, its articles can be read, cited and taught from without a subscription, in any setting where newborns are cared for.
