Membership
An optional way to support the journal, kept deliberately separate from how manuscripts are judged.
Membership supports the journal. It is not a route into it: the editorial process is the same for everyone. Current terms come from the editorial office.
What membership is
Membership is an optional way to support the journal’s open-access publishing and to stay in contact with its editorial activity. It is a relationship with the publisher, and it sits outside the editorial process entirely.
Researchers who work in the journal’s subject areas are welcome to join, whether or not they have published here.
Membership and editorial judgment
Membership confers no advantage in the review or acceptance of a member’s own manuscripts. A member’s submission is screened, assigned, reviewed and decided on exactly the same terms as any other, in the same order, against the same criteria.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial or reviewing roles.
Current terms
The membership categories currently offered, what each includes, the subscription period and the renewal arrangements are confirmed by the editorial office. Anyone considering membership is welcome to ask for the current terms in writing before joining.
Any charge that applies to publishing an accepted article is set out on the article processing charges page and is a separate matter from membership.

Publishing costs and the journal’s policy set are published separately, and apply to members and non-members alike.
