Send the manuscript to the editorial office and a member of staff will lodge it for you. Use this route if either of the others is difficult for you.

Every route reaches the same editors and the same review process. Which one you choose has no bearing on how your manuscript is assessed or how quickly it is handled.

What the journal accepts

  • Original ResearchFull reports of original studies, including clinical trials and other prospective and retrospective designs.
  • Reviews including Systematic ReviewsSyntheses of existing evidence, reported against the relevant reporting guideline.
  • Methods and ProtocolsDiagnostic, measurement and analytic methods, and study protocols, with the benchmarking that supports them.
  • Short CommunicationsConcise reports of findings that stand on their own without a full-length article.
  • Case ReportsIndividual presentations with diagnostic, therapeutic or mechanistic value to practice.

The respiratory contribution must be central to the manuscript. A study is in scope when its research question, analytical focus, interpretation or principal contribution materially advances understanding of respiratory disease or health, including foundational physiology of breathing where it informs that subject. Recruiting respiratory patients or recording a respiratory measurement counts toward scope only where the respiratory question is substantive to the study's own purpose. Fit turns on that contribution, not on novelty, treatment benefit or clinical impact.

Readiness

Before you send it

  • The manuscript is an editable text file, with figures supplied separately.
  • A title page carries the authors, affiliations and the corresponding author's details.
  • Ethical approval, consent, trial registration and data availability are stated where they apply.
  • Funding and competing interests are declared, and any use of AI tools is disclosed.
  • References are complete, and the reporting guideline you followed is named in the methods.

The instructions for authors set out each of these in full.

What happens next

After you submit

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. An article processing charge is payable after acceptance, never before.
