The journal reads for substantive scholarship on either organ, and for work that spans them. The areas below are where submissions are especially welcome.
Splenic research
The spleen
Splenic work is read as a complete subject in its own right.
- Splenic immunology and the immune state that follows asplenia
- Splenic pathology, morphology and imaging
- Splenectomy, partial splenectomy and operative technique
- The spleen in hematological and systemic disease
Hepatic research
The liver
Hepatic work is read from mechanism through to population.
- Cellular, molecular and metabolic liver biology
- Viral, metabolic and alcohol-associated liver disease
- Hepatobiliary pathology and clinical hepatology
- Cirrhosis, portal hypertension and transplantation
Across both organs
Work on the portal circulation and portal hypertension, on hypersplenism, on transplantation, and on the immune consequences of losing or preserving splenic tissue is welcome and is read as central to the journal rather than as a borderline case.

Each type is assessed by the standards that suit it. Preparation requirements are set out in the Instructions for Authors.
Editorial and Perspective/Commentary are invitation-only.
How to submit
Routes for a manuscript
Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, membership, editorial roles and paid services.
