Journal of Water welcomes submissions throughout the year from researchers, engineers and practitioners working across the water sciences.
A standing invitation
Regular submissions are accepted throughout the year
The journal reads work on water as a physical, chemical, biological and social system. That includes the hydrology of a catchment, the quality of a supply, the performance of a treatment process, the behavior of a reservoir or an aquifer, the condition of rivers, wetlands and estuaries, and the arrangements under which water reaches the people who use it.
Submissions are welcome at any time; there is no themed deadline to wait for. Work is assessed as it arrives, on the standards set out in the editorial policies.
Work the journal is glad to receive
Field and site studies
Measurement campaigns and monitoring programs that report their sites, sampling and analytical methods in full, including single-catchment and single-system work.
Modeling and simulation
Hydrological, hydraulic, water-quality and resource models, with their set-up, inputs, calibration and uncertainty reported so the result can be assessed.
Process and treatment research
Laboratory and pilot-scale investigation of treatment and supply processes, and the performance of operating systems.
Methods and instrumentation
Analytical methods, sensors and protocols, with the validation that establishes what they can measure and where.
Syntheses and reviews
Critical syntheses that bring a body of water research together and say what it does and does not establish.
Aquatic and estuarine ecosystems
Rivers, wetlands, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters as living systems, and their response to land use, hydrological change and water quality.
Water, environment and society
Governance, economics and practice where the analysis rests on evidence about water systems and the people who depend on them.
Article types
Routine article types: Research Article; Review Article; Systematic Review and Meta-analysis; Methods Article; Data/Resource Article; Short Communication; Case Study.
Invitation-only formats: Editorial — invitation only; Perspective/Commentary — invitation only.

Three things worth checking
- Your work answers a question the Aims and Scope covers, and the manuscript says which one.
- The declarations the journal requires — data availability, ethics and consent, trial registration where it applies, funding and competing interests — are in the manuscript. The Instructions for Authors lists them.
- You are using one submission route. Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
