Journal of Energy Conservation
Journal of Energy Conservation publishes peer-reviewed research on how energy is generated, stored, distributed, used, and conserved, and on the technologies, methods, and policies through which those gains are achieved.
It serves researchers, engineers, analysts, policymakers, and practitioners whose work spans energy systems at every scale, from a single material or process line to regional grids and national policy.
Where the journal’s research meets

- Aims
- Energy efficiency, renewable integration, emissions reduction, and sustainable energy systems
Purpose
A shared record for energy conservation research
Energy conservation is studied by engineers, physical scientists, computer scientists, economists, and policy analysts, often in separate literatures. Journal of Energy Conservation brings this work into one open-access record, so that a study of waste heat recovery, a machine-learning forecast of building demand, and an evaluation of an efficiency standard can be read alongside one another.
The journal publishes experimental, computational, analytical, and implementation studies. Accepted article types and their preparation requirements are set out in the Instructions for Authors.
Remit
Conservation as the organizing question
Each article addresses how energy can be used with less waste, supplied more sustainably, or managed more effectively. Efficiency, renewable integration, storage, and policy are distinct routes to that aim, and the journal’s scope keeps them in view together.
Core research domains
- Renewable energy technologiesSolar photovoltaics, wind, geothermal, biomass and biofuels, hydropower, and hybrid systems with microgrids.
- Energy storage and distributionBatteries, thermal storage, hydrogen and fuel cells, smart grids, and demand response.
- Building energy systemsHVAC, envelope design, zero energy buildings, lighting, energy modeling, and retrofit.
- Industrial energy efficiencyProcess optimization, waste heat recovery, cogeneration, energy auditing, and data centers.
Further focus areas
- Computational and AI methodsForecasting, optimization algorithms, digital twins, and energy-efficient computing.
- Transportation energy systemsVehicle charging, vehicle-to-grid integration, fleet electrification, and alternative fuels.
- Energy policy and economicsPolicy evaluation, performance standards, subsidies, carbon pricing, and energy security.
- Cross-cutting technologiesCarbon capture and storage, integrated systems, the energy–water nexus, circular economy, and life cycle assessment.

Editorial responsibility
Editorial responsibility and publishing principles
The editorial board
The editorial board brings together researchers in bioenergy and anaerobic digestion, photovoltaics and photovoltaic materials, green technologies and green chemistry, computational intelligence, logistics, and natural-resource economics.
Editors provide scholarly stewardship by overseeing peer review and upholding publication ethics.
Open access and fees
- License
- Articles are published under CC BY 4.0, and authors retain copyright.
- Fees
- The article processing charge is USD 1,499, invoiced upon acceptance.
- Preservation
- Journal content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive.
Peer review and decisions
- Screening
- All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
- Review model
- Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
- Reviewers
- Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
- Decisions
- Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial roles.
