The Journal of Farming welcomes submissions throughout the year

The Journal of Farming publishes peer-reviewed research across farming systems: crop production and agronomy, livestock and feed science, soils and water, farm economics, management, and sustainable practice.

Regular submissions are accepted throughout the year. The journal welcomes work from researchers, research stations, universities, government services and independent research groups in any country, and at any scale from a plot or a herd to a region.

Scope is set out in full in Aims and Scope, which is the authoritative statement of what the journal considers.

Crop production and agronomy
Spacing and population, nutrition, growth regulation, protection, harvest and crop management.
Livestock and feed science
Rations, substitution and supplementation, performance, efficiency and husbandry.
Soils and water
Fertility, structure, conservation, irrigation, drainage and water balance.
Farm economics and management
Costs, returns, margins, risk, timing, labor and machinery.
Sustainable practice
Resource-use efficiency, stewardship and the long-term capacity of a system.
Measurement and method
Instruments, sensing, data and decision tools tested in production conditions.

What makes a strong submission

Reported so a reader can use it

The journal asks for the conditions of a study to be reported as carefully as its result: the site and season, the system and the variety or class of stock, the treatments and their timing, the design and the analysis.

A result that is specific to its conditions and says so is more useful than one generalized beyond its evidence. Studies that report what a practice costs alongside what it achieves are particularly welcome.

Preparation requirements are on Instructions for Authors.

How submissions are handled

What follows a submission

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.

Submission routes

Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
