Special issues
Propose a special issue
The Journal of Farming welcomes proposals for focused collections that address important questions in farming systems — in crop and livestock production, agronomy, soils and water, farm economics, management and sustainable practice.
A collection suits a subject where scattered work would gain from being read together: a management problem approached from several systems, a resource constraint studied across regions, or a method whose application to farming is still being established.
Researchers with relevant expertise are invited to review the requirements below and write to the editorial office.
- What a proposal contains
- The subject and why it needs a collection now, the questions it would cover, the proposed guest editors with their affiliations, and an indication of the work likely to be submitted.
- Guest editors
- Named researchers with a publication record in the subject, who agree to handle manuscripts to the journal’s policies.
- Scope
- The collection must sit inside the journal’s remit, as set out in Aims and Scope.
- Timetable
- An opening and closing date for submissions, agreed with the editorial office.
How a collection is run
The safeguards that apply to every special issue

The same review
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

The same decision criteria
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
A manuscript submitted to a collection is assessed on the same basis as any other submission.

Guest-editor independence
Guest editors declare their interests in the collection and in the manuscripts. A guest editor who has submitted to their own collection takes no part in handling that manuscript, which is assigned independently.

Publication terms
Articles in a collection are published under the journal’s ordinary terms, and the article processing charge and withdrawal terms are the ones published on the Article Processing Charges page.
